The Lakers have spent the past two days scheming ways to slow down the four-time All-Star in Game 2 on Wednesday night after he torched them for 33 points and 14 assists in the Hornets' series-opening victory.

After two days of evaluation, the Lakers confirm their worst fears about Paul's abilities were realized in Game 1. The Lakers are not particularly well-equipped to counter what Paul does well, and Bryant said they'll need more than one player paying attention to Paul on every play just to slow him.

Los Angeles' pick-and-roll defense has been excellent at times during the season, but coach Phil Jackson said Paul's basketball sense makes the Hornets' favorite play particularly tough to contain. No matter how the Lakers approach it, Paul can find a way to exploit it, either with a quick drive or a savvy pass.

Near the close of an impressive rookie coaching season, Williams is still learning the best ways to help Paul. Sometimes the coach will call plays, but he'll also allow Paul to run the show.

Expectations are soaring for the Bulls after they breezed through the regular season, winning a league-high 62 games and securing homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs. The first round was supposed to be little more than a simple exercise on the way to a bigger goal, yet there they were sweating it out right until the end in the opener.

The Pacers gave them all they could handle even though they struggled for much of the season and changed coaches along the way, with Frank Vogel replacing Jim O'Brien. They juggled their rotation, too, and played better down the stretch. Even so, few expected them to push the Bulls, but that's exactly what they did on Saturday.

Ranked 13th in points per game and 26th in field goal percentage during the season, the Pacers were making about half their shots for most of the game against a team that held opponents to a league-low 43 percent. The last few minutes, though, were rough for Indiana .

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra didn't go out on that limb, saying that it's "too soon" to know if the 2006 NBA finals MVP will be available when Miami gathers for practice Monday morning to complete preparations for Game 2.

Wade told the team that he felt a headache coming on Saturday afternoon before Miami's 97-89 victory, playing 35 minutes without any obvious discomfort. Wade scored 17 points in that game, five of them in the final 1:34 as the Heat held off a huge comeback attempt by the 76ers.

Good news for the 76ers: They've held the Heat under 50 percent shooting all four times they've played this season. Here's the bad news: They've lost all those games.

The Heat have clearance from the NBA if Wade has to wear the goggles Monday.

After two run-ins with Denver center Nene late in the season, Oklahoma City's Kendrick Perkins hesitated for a moment when asked Saturday what he expected from the matchup in the playoffs.

The two big men were literally face to face -- foreheads pressed against each other -- in Denver less than two weeks ago, then Nene had to push his way out of a Perkins headlock in a rematch three days later in Oklahoma City.

When the teams play again Sunday night in Game 1, there's almost an expectation that the two will butt heads again.

"Is this a trick question?" Perkins asked. "I don't know. I don't know what to expect."

The Thunder brought in Perkins for times like these.

A stout defender in the low post, he brings the youthful Thunder a load of playoff experience. While most of his teammates have never made it out of the first round, Perkins has won an NBA title in Boston and went back to the finals last season.

He wasn't even healthy when Oklahoma City sent away two starters to get him from Boston at the trade deadline. All he talked about was getting enough games under his belt so he could be ready when the playoffs started.

The Thunder went 13-4 with him in the lineup, with Serge Ibaka moving from backup center to starting power forward.

"He gives them a defensive presence that they didn't have, and I think the combination of Ibaka moving in a good direction and him coming in, that's a strong play," Denver coach George Karl said last week. "Defensively, it's a strong play."

My First Kobe Bryant Graded Rookie Card: 96-97 Topps #138 RC BGS 9.5

For my Kobe Bryant side PC, I don't intend to collect all his cards.

Only his rookie cards as well as his insert cards from his rookie year up to the 1998-99 NBA season.

A tall order for me is to collect Kobe Bryant autographed cards with one of each kind as listed here.

Not contented with my quest, I added another one: to collect all of his rookie cards graded BGS 9.5 or PSA 10. Those that are GEM MINT copies to be more specific.

This is my first one I got off eBay: a 96-97 Topps #138 RC graded BGS 9.5.

I'm hoping to get more although getting them nowadays is very hard as with the start of the 10-11 NBA Playoffs, Kobe Bryant's quest for his sixth championship ring has began.

Kobe Bryant 96-97 Topps Draft Redemption

Kobe Bryant's rookie campaign was not exactly explosive.

As only the 13th pick in a very deep 1996 NBA Draft, and the first guard to be ever taken out of high school at that, his minutes were very limited especially that the team he plays, the Los Angeles Lakers already got a talented guard duo in Eddie Jones and Nick Van Exel.

As such, his trading cards were very much largely ignored by collectors in lieu of batch mates Allen Iverson, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Stephon Marbury and Antoine Walker who were immediately trusted into the limelight as franchise saviours.

So, when the 96-97 Topps Draft Redemption cards came out, few were redeemed for card #13. The Draft Redemption trade deadline was April 1, 1997 and it was already too late for collectors when Kobe blossomed into a superstar in his sophomore campaign.

This is the reason why the 96-97 Topps Draft Redeemed card is one of Kobe Bryant's rarest rookie year cards. Luckily, I was able to get one off eBay for my side PC. This was included in my April 11 - 15 mail week.

I think this is also one of his most beautiful albeit also one of the most condition sensitive due to chipping issues.

I'm hoping to get a graded one if funds allow me someday. A BGS 9 or PSA 9 will do.
