New York Knicks picks Patrick Ewing Jr

August 2008

Following the footsteps of his father, Patrick Ewing Jr,the eldest son of the hall of fame father Patrick Ewing, has been acquired from Houston to New York for the draft rights to center Frederic Weis. Patrick Ewing Jr a 6-8, 240-pounds, was originally drafted by Sacramento in the 2008 NBA Draft as the 43rd overall selection. He played his first two collegiate seasons at Indiana University before transferring to Georgetown, where his hall of fame father also played in college. As a senior with the Hoyas during the 2007-08 season, Ewing averaged 6.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 34 games, winning the Big East Sixth Man of the Year award.

Iranian 7 footer center signs with the Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies signed free-agent center Hamed Haddadi, who led all 2008 Olympians in rebounding and blocks. He is also the only player to average a double-double (16.6 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.6 blocks) in Olympic competition while playing five games for the Iranian National Team. The 7-2 Ahvaz, 254-pound center, Iran native was scouted by the Grizzlies General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace prior to the olympics in Rocky Mountain Revue Summer League in Salt Lake City, Utah,where the Iranian National Team played exhibition games against the NBA teams. The 23-year-old, who was not selected in the 2004 NBA Draft, recently averaged 14.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in 25.5 minutes in two games for the Iranian team against NBA competition at the 2008 Rocky Mountain Revue.

Leyendas (II): Earl "The Goat" Manigault

La historia de Earl “The Goat” Manigault puede ser malinterpretada. No es la historia de un increíble talento para el baloncesto desperdiciado por las drogas. Es una lección acerca de la Redemption tan de moda en los últimos meses. Cuando era niño Earl parecía ser otro chico negro del gueto que tenía que sobrevivir a la violencia y la drogas de las calles de Harlem, un chico sin futuro, pero el resto del barrio descubriría años después que sería el más talentoso e importante jugador callejero que haya pisado las canchas urbanas de Nueva York, desde Harlem hasta el Bronx y Queens.

A la edad de 17 años Earl Manigault ya había ganado notoriedad y la leyenda había nacido. Lo que diferenciaba a este joven del resto era un talento único a la hora de jugar al basket.

La mítica Rucker League iba a ser el escenario en el que se iba a dar a conocer. En esta competición veraniega se juntaban los mejores jugadores de playground con algunos de los jugadores profesionales de más renombre: Lew Alcindor, Earl Monroe, Julius Erving, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Connie Hawkings, Jackie Jackson o Helicopter Knowings. De esa época viene el apodo de La Cabra, debido a sus espectaculares saltos. Sin embargo otra teoría afirma que el nombre le viene de la imposibilidad de uno de sus profesores en pronunciar bien su apellido, lo que derivó en apodo, The Goat. Sea como fuera, con apenas 1.85 de estatura y no muy fuerte, su físico no era intimidante, pero lo compensaba con gran agilidad, movimientos acrobáticos, dribleo y un tremendo salto vertical de 52 pulgadas (1 metro con 30 centímetros!).

El doble mate

Pero no sólo de salto vive el jugador, aunque ayude… Manigault era capaz de crear cosas nuevas nunca vistas en el mundo de la canasta. El caso más conocido, y por el que su nombre es más conocido, sin duda es el doble mate. Por muchos concursos que hayamos visto en los últimos años, nunca hemos llegado a ver a nadie irse hacia el aro, meterla para abajo con la mano derecha, atrapar el balón con la izquierda antes de que caiga y volver a cambiarlo de mano para volver a machacarlo con la diestra. Suena a jugada inverosímil, pero para alguien como The Goat no lo era…

Entre otras de sus hazañas, algunos afirman haberle visto pisar la frente de un oponente en su camino ascendente hacia el aro. También saltaba hasta la parte superior del tablero para recoger los dólares que sus amigos le dejaban en forma de apuesta. Su afición por las apuestas le llevó a ganar 60 dólares después de meter 36 mates seguidos de espaldas en un partidillo. Además, en su etapa de High School logró el récord de anotación de la historia de Nueva York con 52 puntos. Los rumores dicen que lo hizo ante Julius Erwing.

Desafortunadamente, sus problemas comenzaron cuando le echaron del Harlem’s Benjamin cuando fue sorprendido por fumar mariguana. Pero él no se dio por vencido, finalizo los estudios en el Laurinburg Institute.

Después vinieron las invitaciones de los colegios y universidades. Al menos 75 instituciones se interesaron por el fenómeno de Harlem incluyendo nombres como: Duke, Indiana y North Carolina. El opto por la pequeña universidad Johnson C. Smith. Una escuela con un gran porcentaje de alumnos de raza negra. Pero sus notas no fueron muy buenas y entro en constantes peleas con su entrenador, lo que le llevo a estar solo un semestre antes de volver a Harlem.

Una vida de superación

Es aquí cuando empezó su adicción a la heroína. Se paso años mendigando y robando para satisfacer su vicio. Durante este tiempo, entro dos veces en prisión. La primera vez de 1969 a 1970 (16 meses por posesión de drogas) y otra entre 1977 a 1979 (por un intento fallido de robo). Una vez rehabilitado de su adicción, dedico los últimos años de su vida en orientar a la juventud y alejarla de las drogas, instauro e impulso el torneo “Walk away from drugs” en el mismo parque que lo vio en su mejor época y colaboro con el programa “Stay at home” de la NBA.

A las 12:45 pm del 16 de mayo de 1998, Earl “la cabra” Manigault murió debido a un fallo cardiaco. Hasta el día de hoy la 98th street de Nueva York es conocida por los jugadores de basket callejero como “El parque de la cabra”.

The Goat, el mejor de siempre

Kareem Abdul Jabbar, el día de su retirada, fue preguntado por quién había sido para él el mejor de todos los tiempos. El pívot de los Lakers permaneció callado unos instantes y cuando rompió el silencio afirmó que “The Goat". Jabbar debe saber algo de baloncesto después de 21 años en la NBA, 6 anillos, 1.560 partidos, de ser el máximo anotador de la Liga con 38.387 puntos. Viniendo de quien se llamara Lew Alcindor no parece que fuera un juicio gratuito, no.

En el año 2000 se filmo la película llamada “Rebound: The story of Earl ‘The Goat’ Manigault", donde sacaron muchas de las jugadas de la cabra y os recomiendo que la veais. Se centra mas en la caida al mundo de las drogas pero esta muy bien. De esta pelicula son los dos videos del post:

En una entrevista concedida al The Oregonian McMillan ha alabado a Rudy Fernandez y ha afirmado que jugará y mucho. Buenas noticias para el jugador español que con estas declaraciones, del que el año que viene será su entrenador, se debería quedar más tranquiló. McMillan ha puesto por las nubes a Rudy y ha dejado caer que será una de las piezas más importantes de la segunda unidad junto con Travis Outlaw.

En esta entrevista el entrenador de los Blazers ha comentado que el malllorquín jugará mucho y se ha mostrado entusiasmado sobre el próximo año.

McMillan ha declarado "Estaba sentado en el banquillo, intentando no sonreir, ya que teníamos que batirles. Este es mi jugador, y quería aplaudirle, pero tenía que estar serio, porque jugábamos contra él" refiriéndose a la final de las olimpiadas, partido en el que Rudy metió 22 puntos. También comentó: "Esa noche no pude dormir pensando en él, en cómo podría alinearle, lo que podría hacer junto a Brandon Roy. Sí, él jugará para nosotros."

Al parecer la intención de McMillan es la de que Rudy y Outlaw sean los líderes de la segunda unidad, acompañados del base drafteado este año Bayless. También dejó ver la posibilidad de que Roy y Rudy jugasen juntos. Al parecer Roy tendrá minutos de base lo que haría que coincidiese con Rudy en el campo. Esto cierra aun más las puertas del equipo a Sergio Rodriguez que no solo será el tercer base, por detrás de Blake y Bayless, sino que además el que Roy juegue de base hace que practicamente no vaya a tener minutos (si es que tiene alguno).



El pivot iraní Hamed Haddadi ha firmado con los Grizzlies. El jugador, que se dió a conocer en la liga de verano a la que la selección de Irán fue invitada, siguió con su buen juego en las olimpiadas, donde promedió 16 puntos, 11 rebotes y 2'6 tapones por partido. El pivot de 2.18 compartirá con Marc Gasol y Darko Milicic losminutos de juego.



Manu Ginobili pasará por quirofano para artroscopia en el tobillo izquierdo, aunque todavía no se sabe cuando se le realizará la intervención. El escolta estará de baja entre 6 y 8 semanas lo que podría hacer que se pierda el principio de liga.

De la misma forma Chuck Hayes también visitará el quirofano los próximos días después de que se haya roto la nariz. La recuperación del jugador de los Rockets será de alrededor de 6 semanas.

Lithuania Star Retires

Ramunas Siskauskas retires from his national team, Lithuania. Siskauskas,the Euroleague MVP last season after leading CSKA Moscow to the title, played in his third Olympics this summer in Beijing, suffered from a string of losses in the semifinal game against Spain and the bronze medal game against Argentina. At the age of 30, Siskauskas has another chance of being with the team in the next Olympics in 2012 and to the world championships this 2010 in Turkey, decided a year ago and finalizes his decision after Beijing Olympics. "The summers in the national team are exhausting and it’s time to retire. Young players will replace me.” Siskauskas average eleven points and four rebounds per game in Beijing Olympics. And the gallant stand that he showed in this Olympics is one of the most outstanding performances that must be remembered of.

Monta Ellis se lesiona y los Warriors piensan en Livingston. Traspaso entre Bulls y Jazz.

Las alarmas han saltado en los Warriors debido a que el jugador que estaba llamado a guiar el equipo se ha lesionado de bastante gravedad. Ellis ha sufrido un esguince de grado tres y en consecuencia podría pasarse entre tres y cuatro meses en el dique seco.

Los Warriors han pensado en Shaun Livingston para cubrir la ausencia de Ellis. Livingston, que lleva más de un año sin pisar un campo de baloncesto debido a una grave lesión, es agente libre después de que los Clippers renunciaran a la posibilidad de igualar cualquier oferta que tuviese el jugador. Se rumorea que el cuerpo técnico de los Warriors ya han viajado a Chicago para en los próximos días ponerse en contacto con el jugador para negociar su incorporación al equipo.


Por otra parte hay rumores que dicen que los Bulls y los Jazz podrían estar negociando para traspasar algunos de sus jugadores. Estos jugadores podrían ser Ben Gordon, Kirk Hinrich y el argentino Andres Nocioni por parte de los Bulls y Adrei Kirilenko por parte de los Jazz.

Coach Phil Jackson picks his top athlete in NBA

Probably not Kobe Bryant, nor Shaquille O'Neal, nor Michael Jordan, Phil Jackson picks 'The Worm' Dennis Rodman as the top athlete that he ever coached. Skills-wise, Rodman is far below than any other coached coached by Phil Jackson, but as Phil Jakcson said in the recent speech in the University of North Dakota as part of the convocation in which he received an honorary degree, [Rodman] could probably play a 48-minute game and play the 48th minute stronger than the first minute of the game," Jackson told the crowd at UND.

Jimenez Retires from Spanish National Team

Spain’s long-time captain Carlos Jimenez has decided to retire from the national team. The 32-year-old Jimenez, who averaged 5.8 points and 4.8 rebounds at the Olympics, signed off with a silver medal at the Beijing Games.Jimenez played 25 minutes in arguably the greatest gold-medal game of all time, a 118-107 defeat to the United States, scoring 12 points and grabbing three rebounds. Jimenez made his debut with the national team in 1997 and went on to earn 187 caps.The Unicaja Malaga forward led Spain to silver medals at the 1999, 2003 and 2007 EuroBaskets, bronze in 2001, and gold at the 2006 FIBA World Championship.

Milwaukee Buck vs Golden State Warriors in China

The NBA will be back in China this October, featuring two games between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Golden State Warriors in Beijing and Guangzhou. NBA China Games 2008 will tip off in Guangzhou on Oct. 15 when the Bucks and Warriors meet at the Guangzhou Gymnasium with a capacity of 13,000. The two teams then travel to Beijing to play on Oct. 18 at the Beijing Olympic Basketball Arena, an NBA-style arena with a capacity of 17,173. Following the China Games, the multi-purpose arena is expected to host basketball games, other sporting events, concerts and festivals.NBA China Games 2008 will be the league’s third set of preseason games in China. In 2004, the NBA became the first American professional sports league to stage games in China, with two games between the Houston Rockets and the Sacramento Kings in Shanghai and Beijing. Last October, NBA China Games 2007 featured three games between the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Orlando Magic and the Team China All-Stars in Shanghai and Macao. The NBA’s first trip to China dates back to 1979 when the Washington Wizards played against the Chinese National Team.

Outlaw por Conley?? Randolph a Memphis??

Los Blazers podrían estar interesados en hacerse con los servicioes de Mike Conley y para eso podrían ofrecer a los Grizzlies al alero Travis Outlaw. Según los rumores los Blazers podrían estar interesado en dejar que el joven base dirija a su equipo.

El traspaso parece poco probable ya que los Grizzlies no quieren deshacerrse de Conley, que fue su apuesta del draft del año pasado. Aun así, debido a la gran cantidad de jugadores para la posición de base y escolta con los que cuentan podrían aceptar el traspaso haciendose con Outlaw para reforzar el banquillo y darle minutos de descanso a Rudy Gay.

Por su parte los Blazers no se fían de ninguno de sus bases para que el equipo de un paso adelante. Blake no convence, Sergio no cuenta para McMillan y Bayless deberá acostumbrarse a la liga antés de que le permitan dirigir al equipo. La franquicia de Portland cree que Conley es el jugador idoneo para el puesto de base titular por su juventud y por la capacidad que se le vió en la universidad y que, a mi parecer, en la NBA no ha terminado de demostrar. En Portland se juntaría con el que fue su compañero de universidad, Greg Oden, donde podrían volver a formar una pareja importante.


Los Grizzlies también están estudiando la posibilidad de llegar a un acuerdo con los New York Knicks para el traspaso de Zach Randolph. El flojo juego interior que tienen y sus pocos ala-pivots, solo cuentan con Warrick y Darrel Arthur, podría llevar a la franquicia a negociar por el polémico ex-jugador de los Blazers. Los Grizzlies a cambio podrían ofrecer a Antonie Walker y alguna promesa como el mismo Warrick, Crittenton o Lowry. Walker liberaría el año que viene alrededor de 9 millones por lo que podría interesar a la franquicia de la Gran Manzana.

NBA Players Grab a lot of Medals in the Olympics

Aside from the US National Players bagging the gold medal, there are so many NBA players of the other countries earned a medal in the recently concluded Beijing Olympics. A total of 42 current and former NBA players were on the 12 Olympic rosters, the highest number since NBA players began participating in the Olympics in 1992. Ten Olympic teams had at least one current or former player on their roster.

Chinese National Team Member signed with the Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed Sun Yue to a multi-year contract, it was announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released.Originally selected by the Lakers in the second round (40th overall) of 2007 NBA draft, the 6-9 guard started for the Chinese National Team this past month in the men’s basketball tournament at the Beijing Olympics. In six games, Sun averaged 6.8 points, 1.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.33 steals in 28.0 minutes. Playing for the Beijing Aoshen Olympians of the American Basketball Association for the past three seasons, Sun, 23, was named First Team All-ABA in both 2007 and 2008 while earning Second-Team All-ABA honors in 2006. Posting a 12-point, 14-rebound, 12-assist, 8-block, 4-steal triple-double against the L.A. Aftershock during his rookie season in the ABA (2005-06), Sun averaged 13.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 10.5 assists in 2006-07 when the team played its home games at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, CA before moving to Singapore for the 2007-08 season.

2 Time All-star Portland Center Died

SECAUCUS, N.J., Aug. 26, 2008 -- Kevin Duckworth, a two-time All-Star who played for five teams, most famously with the Portland Trail Blazers, during his 11-year NBA career has died in Gleneden Beach, Ore., where he was representing the Trail Blazers on a 19-city summer tour. He was 44. Kevin Duckworth was the 10th leading scorer (7,188) and rebounder (3,327) in Portland history. Duckworth was a key member of Portland's Finals teams in 1990 and 1992, as he started at center for the Trail Blazers in 402 of the 410 regular season games in his first five seasons with the team. At 7-0, 275, Duckworth was one of the bigger players in the league at the time (we had not seen the likes of a Shaquille O'Neal or Yao Ming). And while he was anchor in the paint, Duckworth's size never seemed to be a millstone around the collective neck of the lithe and speedy (Clyde Drexler, Terry Porter, Clifford Robinson to name a few) Trail Blazers. Duckworth averaged 15.3 points and 6.9 boards per game in his first five Blazers seasons.

I’m going to ask you guys to do something I don’t ask of you very often: I want you to trust me. Because I’m about to tell you all about the best player in the world that most of you know nothing about.

It was nearly a year ago, and I was in Miami for game three through five of the NBA Finals. Miami is one of my favorite cities to visit, for the weather and the scenery and the beaches, but after a week there even I was getting kind of punchy. I knew I’d been there too long when Sekou Smith and I found ourselves using a free night to go see “Nacho Libre,” and we actually thought it was funny.

To fill all the down time, a lot of mingling goes on between all the journalists, and one night I found myself chatting with a bunch of writers from overseas. I bumped into a buddy from Spain, and he pulled me aside and gave me two words: Ricky Rubio.

Ricky Rubio, I was told, was the truth. He was a tall, lanky point guard logging serious minutes for DKV Juventut in Spain’s top-flight ACB league. He could run a team, he could pass, he could rebound, he could score, he could play defense.

And he was 15 years old. Playing each game against guys twice his age.

That night I called SLAM’s then-editor-in-chief Ryan Jones and mentioned the kid’s name, and we agreed to keep an eye on him.

About a month later, after I escaped from Miami, I got an email from one of my hombres in Spain. In the final game of the Under-16 World Championships against Russia, Ricky had led Spain to a win in double-OT, including a Sheed-esque half-court shot to send the game to OT.

Oh, and his numbers for that game? 51 points, 24 rebounds, 12 steals and 7 assists.

Meanwhile, I was furious. Here we’d found the next big thing, and he was going to get his own name out there before we could find him.

Ricky’s name started popping up on the internet from time to time, youtube videos starting appearing and in the NBA.com General Manager poll, at least one GM picked the 15-year-old Ricky as the best international player in the world not in the NBA.

Back in December I ran into an NBA GM that I know at a bar in Manhattan, and after we chatted for a minute I said, “Hey, do you know about Ricky Rubio?” He smiled and quickly said, “Nope.” (If he really hadn’t known, he would’ve said, Who?)

All this time, I was terrified to mention his name to anyone, particularly my friends at ESPN or SI, because with their unlimited resources they’d be able to go see him play immediately.

What they wouldn’t be able to do, however, was spend time with Ricky. Between his team (DKV Joventut) and Ricky’s parents, everyone was looking out for Ricky by not allowing him to speak to the media or do any photo shoots, which would be a problem if we wanted to get him in SLAM.

So, since back in September, I’ve been quietly pushing behind the scenes to make this story happen. This process included a series of intercontinental phone calls and emails and negotiations, before we finally got the word in January: Ricky’s parents had decided that Ricky was not going to do any photo shoots or interviews until he turned 18.

Well, except for one: SLAM Magazine.

(You guys always put stuff in the comments section about how much fun my job sounds when I’m getting to travel all over the place, and for the most part it is a lot of fun. The part of my job you don’t see is the behind-the-scenes stuff I go through to make things happen. That part is completely not fun. I always compare it to being the guy in the circus who spins the plates, meaning I generally have about five or six things I’m working on simultaneously. And if I don’t keep all the projects going, they’re likely to crash and shatter. Ricky was a plate I had to work on for a long, long while.)

I came back to the SLAM Dome after All-Star in Vegas completely exhausted, but two days later I was on a flight to Barcelona. Got there on a Friday morning and spent all day Friday in my hotel room at my favorite hotel in the world, Hotel Omm, resting and watching the Canal+ Futbol channel on my projection screen TV. (For what it’s worth, I’ve stayed in hotels all over the world, from one-star to five-stars, and for my money it doesn’t get any better than Hotel Omm.)

Saturday morning I got up and ate breakfast and…I waited. The Barcelona-based photographer we’d hired was calling me, asking what time we were going to meet up with Ricky. I didn’t know. My guy who kind of served as a fixer in all of this wasn’t returning my voicemails or text messages, and I started fearing the worst: That we were going to be stood up, that nothing was going to work out. I was trying to figure out in my how I was going to explain to my boss that I’d flown all the way to Barcelona and spent four nights in a hotel for nothing.

Then my phone rang. We were all good.

(Also, I’m not sure if I’m allowed to divulge who I worked with to help us make this story happen, because of several reasons, but let me here give a huge thanks to my people in Barcelona, Madrid and Spain who helped pull this together for us. Wouldn’t have happened without you, and you guys know who you are. Muchos gracias, mi amigos.)

A few hours later, I was walking into the Rubio family’s apartment in El Masnou, a quiet suburb a few minutes north of Barcelona along the coast. The entire family was there: Ricky, his brother Marc, their little sister, their parents; also there was their three-week old puppy, Chucky. Everyone was speaking Catalan, occasionally veering into Spanish. I speak conversational Spanish, enough to figure out what was being said and to communicate with everyone. Ricky’s mom went and made us all coffee, which she served in little espresso cups on a big tray. I felt like the third Rubio brother. We shot a ton of photos and all sat around and talked for a while.

From there we piled into a couple of cars and drove to El Prat, a town on the other side of Barcelona, to see Ricky’s older brother Marc play. El Prat is home to DKV Joventut’s third-division team, and they were playing Muro, a third-division team from the Canary Islands. Ricky was playing with Joventut the next morning, so he stayed behind in El Masnou to rest up.

The third-division game was played in a small gym, almost like a high school gym, which was full of fans. We settled into the bleachers and just before tipoff Joventut head coach Aito — who used to coach Barcelona and is something of a legend in Spain — walked in and sat right in front of me. I was sitting next to Ricky’s Mom, and wearing a baseball cap which immediately tagged me as an American. Aito gave me the once-over a few times. I was battling jetlag and had to grab a Coke at one point, and while I was in the lobby I bumped into Rudy Fernandez, a swingman for Joventut and one of the top prospects in Europe, there to see some of his friends who play for Muro. El Prat hung tough but eventually lost, and the action wasn’t bad. It wasn’t great, either, but it was comparable to mid-level U.S. college ball.

Early the next morning, my guys showed up and took me over to Badalona, the suburb of Barcelona where Joventut is based. Joventut plays in the Pavello Olimpic de Badalona, the same arena where Magic, Michael and Larry won the gold back in 1992. On this rain Sunday morning, they were playing against Pamesa Valencia.

There’s a lot more about Ricky the basketball player in the SLAM article, but I will say here that he was better than I expected, and I was already expecting something pretty amazing. He can defend, he can pass, he can run a team, he can rebound. The only thing Ricky didn’t do was score, but he only took four shots in the game I went to — someone told me that when Ricky’s playing with Joventut, he doesn’t really try to score because of “the hierarchy of the team.”

The game tipped off and minutes later Ricky checked in. The lead went back and forth, and Joventut would pull ahead whenver Ricky was in the game, but Joventut eventually lost.

How does Ricky play? Well, he’s 6-4 but plays longer. He’s not a speedster, but he’s fast enough. He made a crazy bounce pass off a dribble that made me gasp. An NBA scout saw Ricky play earlier this season and tabbed him the next Pistol Pete, but I think that’s mostly because of the way he looks, with his shaggy hair and prominent nose. I was really reluctant to come up with a comparison for Ricky, because he’s still so young, but the player he most reminded me of?

Magic Johnson.

Yes, I said it. In a way I hate to say it, but it’s true. I’ve tried to think of any other comparison I could, but it’s Magic.

The best thing I can tell you to do is to watch this video. There’s a lot of Ricky on YouTube now, and these clips show how great he is at everything other than scoring. Ricky’s the one handling the ball most of the time and wearing, of course, number 32.

You’re going to hear a lot more about Ricky in the years to come. He recently signed a four-year extension with Joventut, which will keep him with La Penya (The Club) until he’s 20. Until then they’ll continue to protect him and keep him from getting too big for his britches.

I do know this, and I say this without any hesitation: Ricky could play in the NBA right now. You know how most kids look a little bit awkward when they’re playing basketball, like they don’t quite fit into their body? Well, there’s none of that with Ricky. He’s smooth, he’s confident, he knows when and where to deliver the ball every time down.

I was almost hoping Ricky would be a little disappointing, so I could say that yes, he is good, but he isn’t that good. But as soon as I saw him play, I knew the hardest part of the story would be capturing precisely how good Ricky is. We hear so much about these prospects in Europe that now it’s become almost normal to believe that somebody can play even when nobody’s seen them play. I saw a couple of the top Euro prospects play while I was in Spain, but Ricky was hands down better than any of them. His shooting is his obvious weak point, as his jumper was pretty inconsistent. But he can score (don’t forget that 51 point championship game), and his jumper can be honed over the next four years. What he excels at are the things you can’t teach.

(How about this: A decade from now I’ll gladly put my Ricky ravings up against Chad Ford’s Darko droolings, after both have had a players chance to establish themselves in the NBA, and we’ll see who was closer to the truth. Chad, you in? Let’s podcast this bet!)

Ricky did a lot of little things in the game that, as a basketball geek, blew me away. There was one play where he snagged a loose ball (he leads the ACB in steals, by the way) and took off toward the basket down the left sideline. He had a defender on his tail, so Ricky made a right turn near the free throw line and headed across the court. One of his teammates stepped up to the opposite elbow of the free throw line to provide a pick. Ricky saw the guy step up and instead of just running around the pick, he took two steps away from the pick so that the guy setting the pick was at a more severe position to both him and his defender. When he slashed back and finally got to the pick, the defender was a step slow and at the perfect angle and got flattened. I’m not sure if he was somehow taught how to read developing picks and adjust the angles accordingly, but it was phenomenal.

The thing that finally clinched it for me was when I was talking to someone who knows Ricky well. They told me that they’d once asked Ricky what his favorite NBA move was. LeBron’s fadeaway? D-Wade’s crossover?

Nope. Ricky said his favorite move was the way that Steve Nash, when he’s using a pick on his left-hand side, generally takes one extra dribble with his left hand in order to create more space for himself. Seriously. 16 years old!

About that tag line on this post proclaiming Ricky’s greatness: Is Ricky really better than Greg Oden or Kevin Durant? Good question, and there’s no easy answer because it’s like comparing an apple to an orange to a peach. They’re three completely different players who each have completely different games. Right now the college guys are more developed scoring the ball and have bodies that are more NBA-ready. But Ricky’s getting there. If Ricky was in this summer’s Draft I’d take either Oden or Durant ahead of them. Four years from now when Ricky’s 20? It’s going to be a much harder decision to make.

Right now, Ricky is an incredible basketball player. Assuming he continues to develop at anything resembling the same rate, Ricky Rubio is going to be one of the great ones.

Trust me.

There are 48 hopeful applicants and among them are the Fil-Foreigners Prospective No. 1 pick Gabe Norwood, point guard Solomon Mercado, Jared Dilinger and Rob Reyes. Leading the list of homegrown aspirants are two-time Philippine Basketball League (PBL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) Jeffrey Chan, TY Tang, Mark Borboran, Cholo Villanueva, NCAA MVP Kelvin dela Pena and shooters Jonathan Fernandez and Patrick Cabahug.The Welcoat Dragons own the No. 1 pick for the second straight year, followed by Talk N Text at No. 2 and San Miguel Beer at No. 3.

Team USA Back in the Golden Days in Olympic Basketball

After a string of devastating and shocking losses in the Olympics and World Championships, the USA Men's Basketball redeemed themselves, capturing the Gold medal in the recently concluded Beijing 2008 Olympics.With Kobe Bryant in the helm, the United States defeated the determined Pau Gasol-lead Spain. After knocking off its first seven foes by an average of more than 30 points, the Americans found themselves in the thick of fight against Spain. In the end, USA stood the gallant effort by the Spaniards, winning the slimmest of margins. Finally,with their effort, they can now acclaimed themselves as the Redeem Team.

Facing tough adversities, Ginebra Gin Kings is now back in the throne after defeating the their protagonist young talented Air 21 Express. After losing the best player in the conference Jay jay Helterbrand in Game 2, and injury from their star player, Mark Caguioa, the Gin Kings fought til the end using their heart and will determination. With Ronald Tubid back in the fold, and playing below 100%, Ginebra Gin Kings still manage to win against the deeper and complete line-up of the Air 21 Express. They use the old trademark, way back in the old days,the Never-Say-Die attitude. Ginebra could not attain this championship if not on their import, Chris Alexander (the best import in the conference) and veteran Erick Menk.
Congratulations to the Ginebra Gin Kings' Players, Coaching staff and to their management.

PARTIDAZO. Al final USA campeón.

USA y España nos regalaron un partidazo para cerrar estas olimpiadas. En un partido igualado los de España volvieron a mostrar su mejor cara para llegar a poner a la selección de Estados Unidos entre la espada y la pared. Finalmente USA supo responder y con un Wade estelar se llevarón la victoria de un partido para recordar.

El partido comenzaba con España poniendose por delante y llevando el ritmo de un partido que desde el principio prometía ser emocionante. Intensidad y talento se veía en ambos lados de la cancha. Pronto Kobe y LeBron hacían dos falta cada uno e iban al banquillo. Con estos dos en el banquillo USA recuperó la desventaja y terminó el primer cuarto con un igualado 31-38 con Dwyane Wade liderando a USA.

En el principio del segundo cuarto USA salió más enchufado y enseguida conseguía una ventaja de 12 puntos. Entonces Juan Carlos Navarro y Rudy Fernández compartieron campo con Navarro de base y así llegaron los mejores minutos de la selección española con un Navarro estelar y un Rudy muy enchufado. La primera mitad terminó con 61-69. Una primera mitad para recordar. Dwyane Wade con 21 puntos y Rudy Fernández con 13 lideraban a sus equipos.

En el tercer cuarto bajó el espectáculo y dominaron las defensas. España llegó a rebajar su desventaja hasta los cuatro puntos; pero nuevamente volvía a aparecer Wade para volver a poner a su equipo a 10 de ventaja. Al finalizar este cuarto el partido iba 82-91 y todo apuntaba a que viviriamos un gran final de partido.

España metió el miedo a los estadounidenses poniendose a 2 puntos pero los americanos volvieron a ampliar la ventaja, esta vez de mano de Kobe con un triple más falta personal que volvía a poner a USA 9 arriba y hacía que Rudy fuera expulsado por faltas. A esto le siguió una canaste de un equipo que era inmediatamente contestada por el otro. Finalemte y tras dos técnicas pitadas a favor de USA el partido terminaba 107-118.

En el partido cabe destacar la gran actuación de Navarro que tras unas olimpiadas para olvidar hizo un partidazo y fue uno de los líderes de España. Saliendo de titular y jugando muchos minutos de base hizo sus mejores minutos en este torneo y los mejores minutos de España coincidieron con él en pista.

Celtics fichan a Darius Miles. Miami busca hombre grande y veterano.

Los Boston Celtics ya han encontrado al alero que sustituira a James Posey en la rotación: Darius Miles.

El jugador, que tiene un promedio de 10 puntos y 5 rebotes en su carrera, lleva dos temporadas sin jugar partidos devido a los problemas en su rodilla (sufrió dos operaciones debido a una micro-fractura) pero, parece que los Celtics confian en sus posibilidades al salir del banquillo. Se le daba por retirado pero tras unos entrenamientos privados de prueba con los Celtics ha logrado convencer con su juego a la directiva para firmarlo.

Se desconoce el contrato pero, me imagino que los Celtics no se arriesgaran y protegeran sus arcas de una posible lesión.

Por otro lado, los Heat siguen a la caza de un jugador grande y veterano que refuerce su plantilla. Al estar sobrepasando ya el límite salarial, los Heat se han fijado en 3 pívots veteranos para que acompañen a Mark Blount y al lesionado Alonzo Mourning. Jamaal Magloire, Lorenzen Wright y DJ Mbenga han recibido una invitación de los Miami Heat para visitar sus instalaciones y negociar el posible traspaso despues de unos entrenamientos privados.

Jamaal Magloire (2.11 metros y 30 años) y comenzo la pasada temporada en los Nets pero firmo por Dallas tras ser despedido. El jugador que fue All-Star hace 4 años promedio 2 puntos y 4 rebotes en 9 minutos de juego.

Lorenzen Wright (2.11 y 32 años) jugó la pasada temporada en los Hawks y en los Kings. Apenas llegó a 1 punto por partido y 2 rebotes en los 18 partidos que jugó en todo el año.

DJ Mbenga (2.13 y 27 años) jugó en los Lakers la temporada pasada y promedió 2.5 puntos por partido.

Olimpiadas: España sufre pero ya tiene la plata

Sufrieron y Pau Gasol no brilló tanto como debía pero, España ya esta en la final con la medalla de plata asegurada al derrotar por 91-86 a una muy cansada Lituania.

El partido estuvo muy igualado durante los dos primeros cuartos, en el que España y Lituania se alternaron en el marcador. Los españoles ganaron el primer cuarto por 21-19, pero los lituanos se fueron dos puntos arriba al descanso (42-40).

En ese tramo, Lituania fue mejor que España al mejorar el juego desde el perímetro al encestar 6 triples de 13 intentos, de los cuales un irreconocible Simas Jasaitis encestó tres y para guiar al equipo con 11 puntos. España tampoco anduvo desafortunada al acertar 3 de 9 triples y 9 puntos de Gasol. Los lituanos estuvieron además mucho mejor a la defensa, pese a perder más balones.

El tercer cuarto siguió igual de reñido y finalizó con un canastón de tres de los lituanos y un tiro libre por falta para dejar el marcador en un 66-62.

Pero en el último periodo, Gasol comenzó a dominar en la pintura e hizo 5 puntos importantes y lleno de faltas a los pivots lituanos, mientras que Rudy Fernández y Felipe Reyes aportaban ofensivamente. A falta de 4.33 minutos por jugar, se pusieron 5 puntos arriba (79-74) y el partido paso a lucharse bajo la canasta.

España siguió manteniendo el resultado y con 18.9 segundos tenían una ventaja de 6 puntos (87-81). Los lituanos intentaron la machada con un triple (nefastamente defendido) de Jasikevicius pero, el pase estaba atado (91-86).

A destacar que, Kleiza fue expulsado por dos antideportivas ( y no anotó )y además, no terminaron Siskauskas, Ksytof Lavrinovic y Marijonas Petravicius. Con 4 faltas se quedaron Javtokas, Jasikevicius y Kaukenas. Por España tan sólo Jimenez y Marc Gasol llegaron a las 4 faltas personales. Por otro lado, la baja de Calderon se noto y a la espera de su recuperación Raul Lopez y Ricky hicieron su función.

Ahora toca intentar que suene la campana ante USA pero, por lo menos, la presea de plata esta asegurada.

Empieza el partido, gana el salto Howard, balon para USA. Se han necesitado 5:30 para USA llegara a los 10 puntos, con un triple de Bryant, por los malos porcentajes de tiro, sobre todo de triple. Le pitan la tercera falta a Ginobili a falta de 4:12 para el final del 1º cuarto y su entrenador no lo cambia, a falta de 3:39 se duele del tobillo y su entrenador lo sienta. Partido igualado hasta que USA hizo un parcial de 18-0 y se fue de 17 (21-4). Fin del primer cuarto con un marcador muy favorable a USA, 30-11.

Empieza el segundo cuarto con un canaston de Nocioni tirandose hacia atras encima de Bryant. A falta de 7:10, Nocioni le coloca un tapon espectacular a Bryant al intentar un mate en un contra-ataque y en la siguiente jugada Paolo Quinteros mete un triple. A falta de 4:20 Argentina se acerca hasta ponerse a 8 puntos con una canasta de Juan Pedro Gutierrez. Tras una remontada increible de Argentina, que hiba 19 abajo al principio del cuarto y se coloco a 9, protagonizada por los 10 puntos consiguidos por Scola, se acaba la primera parte con un marcador de 40-49.

Renovaran a Kidd? Wright renueva con los Heat. NBA puede fichar iranies.

Antes de lograr el complicado traspaso de Jason Kidd, Mark Cuban dijo que le renovarían el contrato cuando concluyese este pero, parece que no hay ningún movimiento en ese sentido.

Kidd se marchó de los New Jersey Nets con destino a Dallas buscando un mejor proyecto pero, también le interesaba la novación que le prometieron para este verano. Algo que, ahora podría no llegar, ya que, no ha terminado de funcionar en el equipo.

Dorell Wright ha renovado por dos campañas más con los Miami Heat después de que, el jugador quedase como agente libre restringido. Wright, del que se comenta que podría haber entrado en la oferta de los Heat por Ron Artest, parece que tendrá un puesto importante en la rotación que vaya a utilizar Spoelstra, después de un buen final de temporada en la desastrosa campaña pasada de Miami.

Según “Yahoo! Sports”, los equipos de la NBA han autorizado la negociación de las franquicias con jugadores iraníes, dando así posibilidad a Ehadadi a firmar con alguno de los equipos que se han interesado por él.

Como ya les comentamos anteriormente, los Memphis Grizzlies son los más interesados y se les empieza a poner las cosas de cara después de que chocasen con problemas diplomáticos.

La NBA ha mandado una carta a todos los equipos informándoles que pueden hacer las negociaciones oportunas con Hamed Ehadadi, así como, con otros jugadores de Irán como Mohammadsamad Nik Khahbahrami, del que también se han vertido algunos rumores que le sitúan en la NBA.

Lituania apeo de las semifinales a los anfitriones de Beijing 2008 y, por quinta edición consecutiva de los Juegos, aspira a colgarse un metal del cuello.

El base del Panathinaikos Sarunas Jasikevicius se tomó el choque como algo personal y guió a los lituanos hasta las semifinales en un pulso de estrellas con el pívot de los Houston Rockets Yao Ming, estrella mediatica local, que soportó una presión defensiva incesante.

Jasikevicius anotó 12 puntos en la primera parte (41-30) pese a que, China compitió hasta la bocina del descanso empujada por la afición local. Lituania se distanció al final del segundo cuarto pero, sintieron la presión de los asiáticos durante toda la primera parte.

Jasikevicius elevó la cuenta personal hasta los 20 puntos en el tercer cuarto y expulso a los chinos del partido con una enorme efectividad desde la linea de tres ( 5-6 al final) dejando el marcador con un espacioso 70-53 al final de cuarto.

El empeño de Yao Ming no bastó para derrotar a una selección que, continua con su dominio olímpico: 3 bronces (Barcelona'92, Atlanta'96 y Sydney 2000) y un cuarto puesto (Atenas 2004) en cuatro participaciones.

La ventaja se disparó por encima de los veinte puntos en el último cuarto y los anfitriones se despidieron de los Juegos (94-68)

Olimpiadas: España recupera su defensa

España regresará a las semifinales de los Juegos Olímpicos 24 años después de la primera y única ocasión que las ha disputado (Los Angeles'84).

España a logrado el pase a base de una defensa de libro y un Pau Gasol rompedor en la zona desde el primer balón. Croacia, sin Marko Popovic por lesión, chocaba una y otra vez contra los pivots españoles que se adueñaron del juego interior desde el primer minuto.

En zona, en individual, incluso en presión en todo el campo, la selección ahogo al peligroso conjunto croata que se había echo respetar en estos juegos olimpicos.

Pau Gasol disputaba el partido número cien con la camiseta de la selección y lo celebró a lo grande. En el primer tiempo anoto 14 puntos en 12 minutos para sentarse en el banco con diez puntos de renta para España y el choque encarrilado (29-19).

No todo es Gasol ya que, la defensa mantuvo a Croacia con una sola canasta de juego hasta el minuto siete y borró del encuentro a su estrella del torneo, Tomas (4 puntos hasta el intervalo).

Además, el tiro de tres, la principal virtud de los croatas, también fracasó contra la actividad defensiva española (1 de 11 a los 26 minutos).

El entrenador croata rebuscaba en el banquillo para dar con un quinteto capaz de abrir brecha en la defensa española. Enseguida recurrió a Zoran Planinic pese a que éste sufría las secuelas del partido de Lituania.

Un 47-28 marcó la máxima diferencia del partido ya dentro del tercer cuarto. Los croatas reaccionaron levemente hasta el 51-41 tras un triple de Marko Tomas pero, España espabilo tras una serie de acciones de Rudy Fernández, Pau Gasol y Alex Mumbrú (59-41 m.32). El partido estaba sentenciado: los españoles descansaban y los croatas se resignaban. Al final el marcador reflejo un 72-59.
